skype

Skype is an incredibly useful communication tool. Not only can the user chat with multiple people, they also have the ability to send files.

To download, go to Skype's download site. This link should automatically take to you the correct version of Skype for your operating system.

For Mac users, select "Download Now" from the Mac page. You will be directed to a new page that will initiate the download. Once the download is complete, follow the set-up wizard, drag the Skype icon to your Applications folder and open Skype from there.

For PC users, Skype is available in Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. Be sure that you are on Skype's Windows page. Select the green "Download Now" button and you will be sent to a page that will automatically download Skype for you. Once the download is complete, run the setup application, follow the setup wizard and launch skype from your desktop.

Once you have launched Skype, you need to create a user name and password. Select the link below the Skype Name entry that reads "Don't have a Skype Name?" This is fairly open, but if you can't think of anything, choose a name close to your name. Once you click on that link, you will be prompted to create a name and password. You should also include an e-mail address to be used if you ever forget your password. This e-mail address will remain private unless you specify otherwise in your profile.

When you have logged in, access your main profile by selecting the "Account" option on the top toolbar. Next, select "My Profile..." This is your public profile. You will have the option to add your name, gender, age, location, phone numbers, and a photo. Add only what you would like others to see. You may leave all of it blank if you choose. Your e-mail will be kept private, but those who know it can use your e-mail address to search for you on Skype. Note: Note that you can change your password at any time using the "Account" drop-down menu.

Another feature that Skype has is that the user controls how much privacy they have when online. It is important to set it to your comfort level. To access this, go to the main Skype drop-down menu and select "Preferences". Once you are in Preferences, go to the "Privacy" tab. One last thing to remember to check in "Preferences" is the "Video" option. If you have a camera connected to your computer, make sure to set the video controls to your liking.

Now you are ready to add contacts. Select "Contacts" from the main toolbar. Once you have selected that, choose "Add a Contact." Type in your potential contact's e-mail address, Skype name, or their full name to search.

When you find your contact, click "Add Contact". You will then be given the option to allow the user to see you when you are online and vice versa, or you may ask to see their status (whether they are online or offline) but not allow them to see you online.

When you communicate with another user, you are in a chat. If you want to add another person to the chat, click on the "Add" button and you will be given the option of who you would like to add to the chat. This is especially useful for short-notice meetings or when you need to run an idea by a few people. You can also create a new chat by referring to the Chat drop-down menu in your toolbar and selecting "Start Public Chat.." You will then be given the opportunity to name the chat and then add users.
